Blue Carbon Law Symposium
The first Sea Grant Blue Carbon Law Symposium will be held at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, May 17-18, 2023. We hope that you will join us to explore this emerging area of science, policy, and law. Our objectives are to:
Understand the legal and policy context of carbon credit markets and how blue carbon fits with these markets Discuss what "blue carbon" means and the state of blue carbon science Assess the quality of claims about blue carbon project potential under qualification conditions Learn about specific blue carbon projects being developed in the U.S. and internationally Identify challenges, barriers, and social equity needs to determine successful blue carbon projects 2022

"Indonesia Sea as World Climate Engine" webinar
Indonesia's territory is passed by the thermohaline circulation, which affects the circulation of the oceans and the atmosphere. The thermohaline circulation that enters Indonesia's territory is commonly referred to Arus Lintas Indonesia (ARLINDO) or Indonesian Through Flow. These currents help move existing warm fresh water from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean through the Makassar Strait, the Banda Sea, and Lombok Strait. ARLINDO also plays a role in the mixing and transferring of saltier and denser water masses from the South Pacific ocean to the Indian Ocean. In terms of the ocean and atmospheric interactions, the ARLINDO phenomenon affects the formation of rain-causing convective clouds. It happens because of the construction of warm pools in the sea level layer, which causes low air pressure on it and convection rate to increase (Siswanto et al. 2019). The public's knowledge about the Indonesian sea's role as a driver of the global climate is essential becausethey are the main actor and forefront of Indonesia's marine management, but only a few people understand this. With this understanding, it is expected that the community can contribute directly to protecting Indonesia's seas. Therefore, through this webinar, hopefully, can occurring the knowledge transfer and increasing public understanding. ACTIVITY OBJECTIVES1. Increase public knowledge and understanding of the Indonesian sea as a driver of the global climate.2. Increase the interaction between the government, the private sector, universities, and professionals to manage disasters at sea and coast. 2021

Weather or Not Podcast (Channel 7 WSVN)
Interviewed on Weather or Not Podcast. Mangroves are essential to South Florida's eco health. But what happens when Mother Nature slams them with a hurricane? Can they recoup? We have a special podcast issue that looks into their well-being and how they are monitored. That's this week on Weather or Not? 2021

Big Picture Session | The World we Build: Radical Sustainability
The pursuit of sustainability and responses to global climate change are existential questions for today's society to which we must find inspiring answers. A vision for a sustainable future imagines communities from local to global finding the balance between social, economic, and environmental equity. The Media Lab community of researchers is committed to continuing and expanding our research on both sustainability and climate Change. The Media Lab is participating in theMIT Climate Grand Challengeprocess, an Institute-wide initiative to spur existing and new research that will enhance our impact on sustainability and climate. The Media Lab specifically proposes to accelerate research on the use ofenvironmental sensing technologiesand data visualization capabilities to make physical and socioeconomic data salient; the use ofcreative and ethical design practicesto work with communities examining the use of new technologies and practices for sustainability; and the use of thearts as a form of inquiryon the challenges of sustainability and climate. During this session, Professor Danielle Wood (Space Enabled) curates several conversations. First, Danielle chats with a collaborator from outside the Media Lab to give an example of the ways the Media Lab community collaborates with specialists in areas such as coastal resilience and forestry mapping as part of projects to design socially conscious environmental management methods. Then, Danielle leads a conversation with several Media Lab faculty members who are currently working in the areas of community-focused design, artistic inquiry, and environmental sensing technologies related to climate and radical sustainability. 2020
