Assessing spatial and temporal controls on sediment transport in Currituck Sound
Grant
Overview
abstract
-
This project will collect novel data on the timing, mechanisms, and spatial distribution of sediment delivery to threatened marsh ecosystems in Currituck Sound. The resulting data will be shared with a diverse group of stakeholders, such as the Audubon Society, NOAA's National Estuarine Research Reserve Association, The Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who are conducting marsh restoration and coastal resilience projects in marshes across Eastern North Carolina. The project will also provide training opportunities to students at both the graduate and undergraduate level at East Carolina University, as well as Chowan University (a PBI) and Elizabeth City State University (a HBCU), thus expanding research opportunities to an underserved student body.
