Phyllis Broughton

  • I hold a BS degree from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College), a master's in Adult Education with a concentration in Information Management from East Carolina University, and a doctorate in Adult and Community College Education with a concentration in Higher Education Leadership and a minor in Curriculum and Instruction from North Carolina State University. With over 30 years of experience, I have served as Department Chair at Pitt Community College and Dean of Academic Affairs and Student Services at Martin Community College in Williamston, NC. These roles have afforded me significant leadership opportunities in higher education.My current research focuses on Generational Gaps in Teaching and Learning, Generational Leadership Styles, Emotional Intelligence in Leadership, and the Challenges and Barriers faced by Baby Boomers in Higher Education, and Use of AI for Educators.

  • Beta Upsilon Chapter President Currently serving as Beta Upsilon Chapter President from 2020-2022. Beta Upsilon is part of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for women educators which promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. 2020 - 2024
  • Leadership Development Seminar (LEADS) for NC General Federation of Women Clubs As chair, I establish and meet with the LEADS planning committee in developing the leadership training for women in leadership roles (or plan to serve in a leadership role) with the NC Federation of Womens Clubs. I coordinate the logistics, scheduling, and logistics of this one-day leadership training in Winston-Salem. 2022 - 2023
  • 2023 NC DKG Convention I am the 2023 NC DKG Convention chair/coordinator for the April 2023 NC DKG convention in Greenville. I work with a planning committee in setting up the logistics and operating for the convention, including recruiting and assigning volunteers. I also scheduled three pre-convention events. 2022

  • Focus Group for Generational Diversity: Teaching and Learning Approaches Co-facilitated a Focus Group with Dr. Xi Lin at Pitt Community College on Monday, January 29. ; There were 12 faculty involved in the focus group and discussion/conversation was held concerning generational differences in teaching and learning online. ; Findings will be used for research project on Generational Diversity: Teaching and Learning Approaches. 2019
  • NC General Federation of Women's Clubs Leadership Training Presented two sessions for NC GFWC Leadership Training on January 18, 2020, at Holden Beach. ; Sessions were entitled "Strategic Planning" and "When Conflicts Happen." This is part of a six-hour leadership training for incoming executive leadership officers for NC GFWC Clubs. (2 hours) 2019

  • Presenter for Educational Excellence Report for Beta Upsilon (DKG) Presented Educational Excellent Report for February 8 meeting of the Beta Upsilon (DKG) on what our five counties (Bertie, Martin, Hertford, Gates, and Washington) are doing to support beginning teachers in these counties. ; Also reported on support for schools in Africa that DKG supports. ; 2019

  • Poster Presentation at the AAACE Conference I presented a poster presentation at the AAACE Conference on "Generational Diversity: ; Teaching and Learning Approaches."   • International Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Confernce Participated and presented at the International DKG Conference. ; My presentation was entitled "Impacting Leadership through Emotional Intelligence." ; This presentation included how to recognize the impact of emotions on human behavior and identify strategies to improve interactions with others. ; It also identified personal emotional intelligence leadership strengths and weaknesses, including communication strategies for women leaders. ; June 27 - 29, 2019 2018
