Think IT; Don't MIS the boat! Showcasing STEM Career Pathways to Middle School Students and Teachers

This proposed 1-week residential academy for middle school students and teachers builds on ECU's experience and expertise to address the long-term goal of attracting young people, and women in particular, into STEM careers. The ECU STEM academy will host middle school girls and STEM teachers, providing education and training to use take-home mini-computer hardware and software. Academic sessions will develop computer programming and web-page building. Several free software languages will allow students and teachers to continue use throughout the upcoming school year. A field trip to Cisco Systems and guest speakers will round out the experience, creating interest to pursue STEM careers in eastern NC. Additionally, by including middle school teachers, we will continue to grow the relationship between ECU faculty and STEM programs in regional counties.
