abstract

  • I applied for EOSA during the Fall 2023 semester and was accepted for the 2024-2025 cohort. The community engaged research I am focusing on during EOSA is a photovoice project that explores experiences with inclusion (or lack thereof) among individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) within community recreation. My community partner is Pitt Community College's Career Academy, which serves individuals with IDD.
  • specific aims you plan to accomplish as an EOSA scholar/team. As and EOCA team we propose to one develop partnerships with the marginalized communities within Greenville and surrounding counties to provide a platform of community members to inform aspiring and practicing clinicians on ways to better serve their community when faced with mental health and substance used disorders. Our proposal aim to utilize cutting edge virtual reality technology in which community members will be able to video their responses and the research team will develop immersive content which practitioners will be able to actively engage with. As a result of the development of this product we hope to reduce stigma associated with discussing mental health and substance use disorders which are significant barriers in accessing care for members of marginalized communities. In addition, this technology will play a significant role in preparing clinicians in better serving under-privileged communities.
