Cynthia O'Halloran

overview

  • My given name is Cynthia S. Deale (my given last name is Deale and I use it professionally--my married last name is O'Halloran). I am a Professor in the School of Hospitality Leadership in the College of Business at East Carolina University. I previously worked at Western Carolina University, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality &; Resort Management at the University of Memphis, the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, and the University of Denver. I teach a variety of courses including those focused on the introduction to hospitality and tourism, food and beverage management, lodging, tourism, sustainable tourism and hospitality. My research interests include the scholarship of teaching and learning, hospitality and tourism education, sustainability, and tourism and hospitality management practices, and I have published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. In addition, I have served as a facilitator for the Certified Hospitality Educator workshop, which allowed me to teach and travel around the globe. I received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Denver, an M.S. degree from Michigan State University, and a B.S. degree from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. I came of age in Portland, Oregon, but have called the south home for over 20 years. I served in a leadership capacity on the board of the International Council of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (as Vice President in 2009-2010, President in 2010-2011, and immediate Past President in 2011-2012), and I continue to serve on the Past Presidents Council and other committees connected to ICHRIE, as needed.
