Ashley A Cannan

overview

  • Ms. Cannan has over 20 years of experience as a child/adolescent clinician with a specialization in play therapy. Before entering the academic world, she served children, adolescents, and their families in a variety of clinical settings. She is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor, which is a credential given by the Association for Play Therapy to licensed clinicians who have specific training in developmentally appropriate therapeutic interventions for children/adolescents and in providing supervision and/or consultation for others pursuing the Registered Play Therapy credential. Ms. Cannan has a passion to serve eastern NC by providing supervision and consultation to the next generation of child/adolescent behavioral health providers.

  • Pitt County School Counselors Meeting Provided professional development opportunity titled, "The Power of School Counselors:Advocating for School Wellness, Safety,and Inclusion"for school counselors gathered for a Pitt County Schools district-wide meeting. 2023
  • Eastern AHEC Workshop for Mental Health Practitioners Helping children decrease or alleviate behavioral and emotional difficulties that interfere with normal functioning can be challenging using traditional psychotherapy. Using the therapeutic power of play has been shown to prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulty and help children achieve optimal growth and development.
    This interactive workshop will give you an overview of play therapy by defining play therapy and discussing the therapeutic value of play, explaining the basic skills needed to develop a therapeutic relationship with a child, choosing appropriate toys when setting up a playroom, and sharing play therapy techniques that are appropriate to use with children in a variety of settings. 2017
