Dr. Azeez Aileru earned a PhD in physiology from Howard University and completed his postdoctoral training in neuropharmacology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in addition to his MS training in pulmonary toxicology from North Carolina Central University in collaboration with the US EPA. Before joining the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine as the Division Director of Basic Sciences, he served as the director of Biomedical Research Infrastructure Center at Winston-Salem State University and an adjunct professor in the Department of Physiology &; Pharmacology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He is a member of many professional and scientific organizations, and a Fellow American Heart Association (FAHA). He serves as a scientific reviewer for many journals and grant reviews as well as directs many NIH training programs. He is a member of the Rotary International Club and holds a seat on the Board of Winston-Salem Rotary.He teaches neuroscience didactic lectures and coordinates basic science curriculum at the ECU School of Dental Medicine (SoDM). He currently serves as an interim Chair of the Department of Foundational Sciences and Research at the ECU SoDM. He grew up in Durham but spent most of his adult life in Winston-Salem, NC, where he raised his family. He enjoys soccer, football, running and traveling.
