I am an assistant professor in the Department of Coastal Studies. As a civil and coastal engineer I explore nature-based and sustainable adaptation to coastal hazards. My work and the work of my lab focuses on modeling and measuring the physical and economic effectiveness of adaptation strategies to coastal hazards and sea-level rise, particularly nature-based adaptation. My research interests are highly interdisciplinary and collaborative, and my lab works on projects funded by NASA, NSF, NOAA, and the IUCN, among others. We work closely with academics and practitioners from a range of disciplines, from engineering, ecology, geology, marine conservation, and human geography.Ireceived an MSc in Coastal Engineering and Management from T.U. Delft in the Netherlands before completing a PhD in coastal flood modeling at the University of Southampton,U.K. I spent the next four years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California in Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz working on nature-based adaptation to coastal hazards.
