Albemarle Sound Observing System Grant uri icon

abstract

  • East Carolina University proposed tasks: 1) Assist with the maintenance and operation of the estuarine observing station in the Albemarle Sound to measure directional currents, waves, meteorological, and water quality conditions. Walsh and Corbett at ECU have significant experience working with a similar estuarine observing system. ECU will work closely with CSI and ECSU faculty, staff, and students to maintain as continuous stream of data collection as possible. 2) Work with COE FRF to compare SWAN model output to wave data being collected as the Pamlico and Albemarle Sound observing sites (including the 2 non-real-time sites being monitored by Walsh and Corbett. 3) Begin to develop site characteristics at the Albemarle Sound observing station. Examine seabed properties (grain-sized distribution and porosity with depth, Pb-210 sediment accumulation rate) at this site to help evaluate the conditions for and nature of sediment resuspension events.
