Through this project we plan to demonstrate the effectiveness of automated water management in rural areas for reduction of peak flow rates and the volume of water exported during flood events. The use of automated water management combined with nature-based infrastructure (i.e. restoration of wetland hydrologic conditions) will also allow other environmental objectives to be achieved. Demonstrating the usefulness of this approach will promote development of a network of similar sites throughout North Carolina to have a greater reduction in flooding severity and damage through the combined effects of many smaller sites.
