Field Assessment of Airdropped Blood Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The Joint Medical Unit and 3rd Special Forces Group currently employ aerial delivery via parachute to supply blood to medics on the ground, assisting in treating wounded casualties. Blood packs frequently experience high impact upon landing, raising concerns about the blood?s viability, stability, and integrity at the molecular level. To address this problem, we propose a two-pronged approach: during Phase I, we will analyze the processes currently used to package and deliver the blood to the medics on the ground and we will examine the degree of viable blood/product lost due to the physical damage. During Phase II we are proposing to devise a sensor that can rapidly assess and inform the medics about the payload usability.
