Greenville on Screen
Grant

We desire to apply for a Basic Preservation Grant to outsource the digitization of three films, all of which we believe have high research value and are in a very serious state of decay. We are unable to digitize any films in-house. Our desired products for each film would be a digital copy that meets national digital preservation standards as well as two new public access copies, including a film print. We have the necessary infrastructure to describe the digital files according to established cataloging standards and make them freely available online to anyone by adding them to our repository. Our current online collections can be viewed at the following link: https://digital.lib.ecu.edu The digital masters would be stored on servers owned by the library and managed by the university IT department. Additionally, we have a plan in place for long-term physical storage of the media post-digitization. We own a 16mm acetate reel containing a silent itinerant film entitled ?Greenville on the Screen? that was filmed by Reelife Motion Pictures in 1941. The film shows scenes of Greenville, North Carolina including East Carolina University and provides a snapshot of life in the town at that time. We have been unable to locate another copy of this film via WorldCat. A portion of the reel was digitized by a previous owner before custody was transferred to us and is posted on YouTube. In addition to being incomplete, it does not meet digital preservation standards.
