In 2005, an Older Driver Working Group was formally established as one of the subcommittees of the North Carolina (NC) Executive Committee for Highway Safety (ECHS), chaired by Susan Coward, Deputey Secretary in the NC Department of Transportation (DOT). The working group has met quarterly over the past three years with the overall objective of improving safe mobility for the state's growing elderly population. There are approximately 23 members of the Older Driver Working Group representing a broad array of stakeholders including the NC DOT's Highway Safety Office, Traffic Engineering & Safety Systems Branch, Division of Motor Vehicles, Division of Aging and Adult Services, NC Law Enforcement representatives, AARP, AAA Carolinas, the NC Medical Society, NC Assistive Technology Program, the National Multiple Scoliosis Society, occupational therapists with driving expertise, and older adulth researchers from NC Universities. From this working group, the core State Team is applying and if North Carolina is selected, will participate in the initiative to develop an action plan for older drivers in the state. The planning session wil re-energize and refocus a group that has been successful in the past, but needs support for developing focused strategic goals and objectives of the group and integrating new members to the goals the Older Driver Working Group.
