2018 Hurricane Season: RAPID: Hurricane Florence-Associated Microbial Influx and Priming of Carbon in the Gulf Stream

Overview

Hurricane Florence (2018), because of its extreme precipitation, will flush out terrigenous DOC and microbes into the APES system and that material will be exported into the North Atlantic through the inlets in the OBX. The request falls into the RAPID category because of the extremely narrow time window we have, to capture the plume as it moves nutrients and suspended particulates out of the Albemarle-Pamlico Sound area through the Outer Banks inlets (Oregon and Hatteras Inlets) and makes its way to the Gulf Stream (~days ? weeks). These inlets serve as the fastest conduit for material exchange from coastal NC to the Gulf Stream.
