Mercury Risk Awareness and Fish Consumption Among the Fishing Community on the Tar-Pamlico River

Overview

Using open ended interviews, focus groups, and a survey, we will assess awareness of advisories against the consumption of fish that are known to contain mercury along the Tar-Pamlico River. We anticipate that awareness of advisories and fish consumption patterns will vary by level of education and ethnicity. This is a pilot study that will lead to a larger research project focusing on the relationships among fish consumption, food safety, health awareness, and subsistence practices along North Carolina's coast.
