Laupus Library has one of the largest anatomical model collections among academic health sciences libraries in the United States with approximately 240 models available for students, faculty, and staff to use for educational purposes. These models have traditionally accounted for around 45% of the library's total circulation with 4088 checkouts between April 2019 and March 2020 and 21,571 checkouts from 2011-March 2021. Despite their expense, these models have proven to provide a sound return on investment with an average cost per use of only $8.57 (which also decreases with every use). The models can be checked out by students and used within Laupus Library to get a hands on feel for the physical anatomy that they are studying. Additionally, Faculty borrow the models for use in their classes. In addition to the students from the Health Sciences Campus, these models are used by students taking anatomy classes on Main Campus as well as those from Pitt Community College.
