abstract

  • This study of hurricane risk and emergency communication effectiveness in coastal zones has the following objectives: Objective 1: Identify, rank, rate sources of emergency information used by the public Objective 2: Identify demographic and communication factors that influence how residents perceive and respond to risks and consequences of a severe weather event including relationships among official and unofficial information sources, personal beliefs, and local norms. Objective 3: Assess the public?s trust in and ability to use information sources Objective 4: Evaluate strategies for communicating about risks and emergencies Objective 5: Disseminate recommendations from research. Results of surveys of 1000+ residents and 700+ businesses of eastern North Carolina are available at http://www.ecu.edu/riskcomm.
