The Economic Impact of Nucor Steel in Hertford County on the Regional and State Economy of North Carolina

In this study the Bureau of Business Research at East Carolina University proposes to measure the total impact of expenditures of Nucor Steel in Hertford County (Nucor from here) on the regional economy (Hertford County and surrounding counties) and the State of North Carolina. Expenditures made by Nucor on any construction, direct pay, other major categories, purchases, and supplier contracts represent an injection into the local economy (direct effect). That initial injection ripples across the economy through suppliers as Nucor makes local purchases which then reverberate through the supply chain (indirect effects). In addition, Nucor?s economic activities generate income for households who then make local purchases, creating income for other households (induced effects). This study will describe and quantify the direct, indirect, and induced effects of Nucor. These economic impacts are measured as output effects, personal income effects, and employment effects.
