Management Information Systems (MIS) STEM Camp Project Profile 2019 Grant uri icon

abstract

  • This project seeks to have a positive impact on the lives of Eastern North Carolina (ENC) citizens in several ENC counties through collaboration between East Carolina University (ECU) and a community partner (the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain) to host Management Information Systems (MIS) STEM Camps specifically for middle school and high school aged girls. The goal of the project is to advance STEM education in ENC and to begin to address the urgent need for females to enter career paths in the under-represented area of STEM fields, specifically technology related fields such as MIS. This camp can address the problem of a continued need for more targeted STEM engagement opportunities that expose students to an atypical STEM career path like MIS. Public schools struggle to provide this content for their students for several reasons such as an already packed curriculum and lack of funding. The world is becoming more technology driven therefore, knowledge of technology is essential. Many ENC counties are rural and economically distressed with the most stressed counties being designated as Tier One. There is particular interest in these programs for underrepresented minorities and students in rural areas as evidenced by legislature supporting these types of activities such as H. R. 5116 (America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science Reauthorization Act of 2010).
