Grant
Overview
abstract

East Carolina University (ECU) proposes a National Science Foundation Track 1 Noyce Scholars program that will follow-up on and extend our previous Noyce Grant (2009-2015). Vital to the proposal are the support of key administrators, important collaborations across campus, with other universities and community colleges, and with public school partners. We propose to recruit 30 science, mathematics, and engineering majors over a three-year period. The science and mathematics education majors will be enrolled in either a master of arts in teaching (MAT) program (for one year) or the last two years of an undergraduate program. These 30 mathematics and science teachers will be prepared and mentored to meet the needs of students in high-need districts in eastern North Carolina school districts. Building off the success of our earlier Noyce grant, the goals of this proposal are to: 1) Increase the number of high school mathematics and science teachers with strong academic backgrounds to teach in eastern North Carolina 2) Support original ECU Noyce Scholars along with future Noyce Scholars 3) Evaluate the teaching of Noyce Scholars and conduct research to inform the preparation of high school mathematics and science teachers to teach effectively in high-needs schools
