Deployed instruments will provide real-time validation data of nearshore ocean and estuarine conditions for the MORPHOS project, specifically the coupled SWAN and ADCIRC models currently under development by Jeff Hanson and Rick Luettich. These observations will be made along the northern Outer Banks, immediately east of Duck, NC and in Albermarle Sound. UNC CSI and ECU will work with its university partners (e.g., Elizabeth City State University) to facilitate the development, deployment, servicing, and research uses of these wave/current meters from these areas. The Coastal Studies Institute proposed tasks: 1. Assist with the preparation, deployment, and maintenance of the cross shelf 10m Wave Scan buoy. 2. Deploy and operate an AWAC Norteck acoustic wave/current measurement gauge off of Jennettes Pier in Nags Head, NC at 8m water depth. 3. Deploy and operate an AWAC Norteck acoustic wave/current measurement guage off of Pea Island National Wildlife refuge in NC at 8m water depth. 4. Assist with the development, deployment, operation, and maintenance of an estuarine observing station in the Albemarle Sound to measure directional currents, waves, and meteorological conditions. CSI's Estuarine and Coastal Processes Program has significant observing expertise, personnel and infrastructure already in place. CSI will work closely with ECU and ECSU faculty, staff, and students to maintain as continuous stream of data collection as possible. For all deployments, CSI will make available infrastructure and expertise to assist with boating, diving, and deployment and maintenance of instruments. East Carolina University proposed tasks: 1) Assist with the development, deployment, operation, and maintenance of the estuarine observing station in the Albemarle Sound to measure directional currents, waves, and meteorological conditions. Walsh and Corbett at ECU have significant experience working with a similar estuarine observing system. ECU will work closely with CSI and ECSU faculty, staff, and students to maintain as continuous stream of data collection as possible.
