Sedimentary Petrology and Geological Framework Investigations in the Southeastern U.S. Outer Continental Shelf Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The purpose of this cooperative, regional-scale project is to perform additional analyses on the geophysical data and cores collected by BOEM contractor CB&I in 2015, and to leverage existing capabilities and data to better understand geologic context and transport mechanisms of sand deposits located on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Currently, an effort is underway in the mid-Atlantic region to use the Atlantic Sand Assessment Project (ASAP) vibracore and grab sample materials collected by CB&I in 2015 to examine the geology offshore geology of NJ, MD, DE, and VA. In a similar way, this project aims to strengthen the research relationship between NC, SC and GA by using the local ASAP samples and geophysical data collected offshore of the southeastern Atlantic states to address questions related to offshore geology and sand resources. In addition to collaboration between project partners, this project will rely on input from numerous state and university scientific partners. Their input will help drive the objectives and desired results of the collaboration. Project results will benefit BOEM's overall understanding of OCS sand resources in the Southeast, and will provide each state with an opportunity to integrate the new vibracore and geophysical data with archived data at both state and regional scales.
