  • The C2C REU will host students at East Carolina University?s Coastal Studies Institute to understand and document how human actions positively or negatively influence coastal resilience in the face of extreme weather events, sea level rise, and population growth. Students will pursue interdisciplinary research projects mentored by faculty located at East Carolina University?s Coastal Studies Institute, Outer Banks, NC, with many of these faculty collaborating in mentoring teams utilizing mixtures of in-person and remote interaction. Team Science efforts will engage REU participants in building collaboration skills, including working as part of a distributed research team ? an increasingly important part of science that students are not currently prepared for. Professional development activities will also be structured to enable the students to overcome cultural and disciplinary barriers to collaboration, thereby providing them with a unique skill set to pursue global change research as an effective interdisciplinary team member. Systems science concepts will integrate projects across the REU, enabling students to identify and understand how dependencies between earth science and other disciplines impact society. The program will take place over a 10-week period, starting with a week-long kick-off workshop, followed by 8 weeks of intensive research, professional development, and skills training. The final week of the program will feature a Poster Symposium where students will share their work with mentors and guests, including regional stakeholders and REU alumni.
