I am currently helping Drs. Houmard and Dohm with muscle biopsies, microdialysis, and data analyses/interpretation for this study. These study visits usually take up about 15-20% of my research time throughout the week.

The significance of these studies is the demonstration that compromised substrate oxidation in skeletal muscle occurs not only in the obese with the metabolic syndrome but can also be found in non-obese, apparently healthy individuals. Further this metabolic defect can be reversed by bariatric surgery. Our proposed studies focus on further identification of this mechanism and the potential of identifying vulnerable persons for early prevention
