North Carolina Coastal Geology Cooperative Research Program Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Continued cooperation between the US Geological Survey and ECU Geological Sciences is achieving high priority objectives for the northeastern North Carolina coastal system, including: 1) understanding the barrier island and estuarine dynamics and 2) defining the Holocene and Pleistocene origin and evolution of the coastal system. This research includes mapping the surface and subsurface of the inner shelf, barrier islands, and estuarine systems, and sampling (coring and drilling) the strata to develop the Quaternary geologic framework. The multidisciplinary and multi-institutional character of this program requires extensive interaction to integrate successfully the multiple data bases around each given topic.
