abstract

  • As the ninth largest state in the US and a growing population of individuals over the age of 65 years, it is critical that North Carolina works towards implementing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Highway Safety Program Guideline No. 13. This project proposes to potential strategies that include: 1) improving access for medically-at-risk older drivers get a comprehensive driving evaluation through strategic partnering of occupational therapy practitioners and driving instructors, 2) education for medical providers for appropriate assessment and counseling older drivers, 3) education to aging and social services for development of information access for their clients, 4) strategies to increase transportation alternatives by marketing transportation plans and collaborating with services (e.g., Uber) for improved alternatives, 4) and education for law enforcement. The developed strategies would be implemented in an identified community or across the state as appropriate with the goal of being a model for other states.
