At East Carolina University (ECU), recent theses and dissertations are available online through our institutional repository (IR) or ProQuest's subscription database. However, the majority of pre-2010 theses and dissertations are only available as physical copies within the library. This project would digitize print theses and dissertations for deposit into our IR in order to expand access to the university's scholarship. In-house digitization is not feasible given the scope of this project and the limited capacity of our digitization unit. Outsourcing digitization will provide a critical mass of content in a timely fashion. We plan to use the occasion of digitization to strengthen relations with alumni and their family members. Library personnel from Scholarly Communication and University Archives will collaborate with college and department administrators, Alumni Association, and University Advancement on this outreach component. A best practices document on engaging university departments and alumni through a thesis and dissertation digitization project will be shared with the library community.
