  • The Pitt County Breast Wellness Initiative?Education will provide culturally-tailored breast cancer education and navigation to screening services for uninsured/underinsured Black and Latina women age 40 and older in Pitt County, North Carolina. The purpose of the program is to 3-fold: 1) To train and support identified Black and Latina community leaders who will serve as lay breast health educators, 2) To increase breast self-awareness and knowledge of breast health, screening mammography, screening guidelines, and importance of early detection, timely diagnosis, and follow-up care among uninsured and under-insured Black and Latina women age 40 and older, and 3) To reduce barriers associated with access to breast screening services via navigation among our target population. Key activities include the provision of 30 educational sessions to 300 women within our target population. These sessions will be in held in collaboration with our partners during monthly breast cancer screening clinics, local community-based clinics, and at local churches and church community events. We will also provide navigation services (e.g. transportation, interpretation, setting up appointments etc.) for 150 women (50% of education session participants). Last, we will provide mammography screening to 60 women (40% of women identified as needing navigation at educational sessions). The project will be evaluated through a change in knowledge and the number of women navigated to mammography screening. Overall, we expect our program will increase knowledge and access to much needed information and screening services among a high-risk and rural population.
