The Pitt County Breast Wellness Initiative?Education will provide coordinated, collaborative and culturally-tailored breast cancer education and navigation to age-appropriate screening services for uninsured/underinsured Black and Latina women age 25 and older in Pitt and Edgecombe Counties in North Carolina. The purpose of the program is to 3-fold: 1) To train and support identified community members who will serve as lay health advisors using an evidence-based lay health advisor training curriculum, 2) To increase breast self-awareness and knowledge of breast health, screening mammography, screening guidelines, and importance of early detection, timely diagnosis, and follow-up care among our target population, and 3) To reduce the barriers associated with access to breast screening services via navigation among our target population. Key activities include the provision of 30 educational session to 300 women within our target population. These educational sessions will be in held in collaboration with our partners during monthly breast cancer screening clinics, local community-based clinics, and other health oriented community events. We will also provide navigation services (transportation, child-care, interpretation, setting up appointments etc..) for an estimated 60 women (20% of education session participants). The project will be evaluated through a change in knowledge and the number of women navigated to age-appropriate screening. Overall, we expect our program will increase knowledge and access to much needed information and screening services among a low-income minority and rural population in eastern North Carolina.
