There are 26 million people ages 70 years or older in the U.S., and 19.1 million of them were on the road in 2001: a 32% increase from 1991. Since drivers 75 years or older are involved in significantly more accidents, more than 40% of all fatal crashes will be associated with age-related frailties by the year 2025 (NHTSA, 2003). Research for the Older Adult Driver Initiative (ROADI) is a project designed to evaluate and develop new assessment tools needed for driving evaluation and rehabilitation in North Carolina. The purpose is to help older drivers retain their freedom, independence, and keep or return them safely to the road. The long term objectives of the program are to develop a functional performance assessment that would be adopted as a standard for screening driving ability, develop interventions that would keep a greater number of older drivers on the road safely, and educate professionals, students, and the public about safe driving in the later years.
