Julie received her Masters in Exercise Physiology in May of 1997. Along with her mentor, the director of ECU's Human Performance Lab, she published her thesis project's work in the Journal of Applied Physiology soon after her graduation. She was employed as a Cardiac/Pulmonary Exercise Specialist in a number of locations after graduation, achieving a wealth of experience in working with patients with various chronic diseases.
This experience rewarded her the opportunity to teach students in the following years upon her return to East Carolina University and the Greenville, NC area. Julie is now an experienced instructor in the subjects of Exercise Physiology, Exercise Evaluation and Prescription, and she has taught in a variety of courses within the department as needs exist. She taught labs with hands-on experience in oxygen consumption tests, body composition assessments, and blood pressures assessments. After serving as a coordinator in the Human Performance Lab and teaching these skills to her graduate assistants, she has helped students understand their required tasks for lab research and community services. She also considered teaching the students to work with clients in a professional manner one of her most important tasks. She provided ongoing coordination between the area fire rescue services and the graduate students, interns with the Human Performance Lab and FITT building to learn the importance of emergency response.
She is an excellent writer and communicator with experience in research and academic writing. She is a writer for health-related topics as well as feature articles and textbooks of various sorts. She has proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and online grading systems.
Julie uses her writing and research experiences in creating content and assignments for her students. The changing needs of students and their ever more technical learning styles remains an area of focus that she would like to seek mastery in for herself and her co-workers.
