Bacterial pathogenicity is not simply a binary trait; viewing bacteria as pathogenic or non-pathogenic may hide important interactions. By identifying the environmental or genetic factors that trigger pathogenic behaviors, this project will enhance our understanding of host-microbe interactions and the conditions that lead to disease. By examining both host and bacterial contributions to infection, this work seeks to define the fundamental determinants of bacterial pathogenicity.
