Mindfulness-Based Virtual Reality Recreation Therapy to Enhance Emotional Well-Being in Substance Use Recovery Grant uri icon

abstract

  • This study will evaluate an immersive, mindfulness-based virtual reality (IMBVR) program specifically designed and delivered by recreational therapy (RT) professionals. Participants will engage in twice-weekly sessions for four weeks, each consisting of ~10?15 minutes of guided IMBVR followed by a 5-minute CTRS-led debrief to support reflection and therapeutic processing. Outcomes will include changes in stress, depression, hope, and happiness, measured pre- and post-intervention. If effective, the project will yield a manualized protocol and training resources to enhance adoption of IMBVR in RT practice, equipping CTRSs and other RT professionals with innovative tools to address the complex mental health needs of individuals in recovery.
