According to Healthy People 2010, there is an underemphasis of health promotion and disease prevention activities for individuals with disabilities. The 2000 U.S. Census reports that 15,140 people with disabilities, aged 21-64 years, live in Pitt County (19.4% of the population), and 52.6% are unemployed. Programs supporting healthy lifestyles for individuals with disabilities remain a high priority. Recent research indicates that active participation in physical activity is a significant factor in the adjustment and well-being of individuals with disabilities. However, many individuals with disabilities are unable to realize their desire to live active healthy lives due to the structural, personal, and financial barriers. The College of Health and Human Performance and the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies recently received a $10,000 grant from the Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation to continue to promote active lifestyles among individuals with disabilities. The grant provides support for individuals for transportation, scholarships for fitness and exercise memberships, and the programming of special events that instruct activities such as adapted waterskiing, wheelchair sports, cultural arts events, and outdoor activities. Over the past five years, the ECU Walker Center Adapted Sports Program (WCASP) has collaborated with the Support Team for Active Recreation (STAR) and ECU ARISE (A Real Integrated Sports Experience) Program to offer individuals with disabilities in Pitt County the opportunity to participate in recreation, sports, and physical activity. Thanks to funding from the Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation, this collaborative program has continued to reach individuals with disabilities who desperately need physical activity. It is the goal of this collaborative effort to continue to provide programs that support individuals with disabilities in their attempt to improve health, well-being, and quality of life issues. This proposal represents a renewal for $15,000 in funding to assist with staff and personnel to implement the program.
