The funding requested in this proposal will be used to fund pre-production costs of a short form video piece on WWI off the North Carolina coast. Funding costs include the travel costs of a research assistant for the pre-production research necessary to complete the video piece, and animation and video editing outsourcing costs to visualize datasets and engagements of the U-boats and their prey. The funds will pay for East Carolina University graduate student Janie Knutson?s travel from her home in Greenville to libraries and archives to acquire images, maps, data and research information that will be used in the development of the video. Although the United States was late to enter into the First World War, the waters of the nation became a battlefield from 1917 onward. Ships operating along North Carolina?s coast recurrently fell victim to the unrestricted U-boat campaign of the Central Powers (led by Germany). This project proposes to tell the little-known story of the vessels, infrastructure, civilians, and combatants along North Carolina?s coastline who were lost, damaged, or attacked in war-related incidents before, during, and after the United States entry into World War I. Graphic elements such as photographs, maps, news and film reels, handwritten accounts, and government reports will be incorporated to visualize the unfolding conflict. New historical maps, created using Geographical Information System (GIS) software and subsequently animated will render highly accurate maps of the coastal and sea battlefield and illustrate where, when, and how combatants interacted. The overall objective of this story is to reveal the hidden local history of the First World War and its impacts on North Carolina to the public. This also includes highlighting the human history of war, such as crew members from sunken ships who were invited onboard the enemy submarine to have a party, or the experiences associated with sinking without warning following u-boat or sea-mine interactions. The funding of this project will allow for the pre-production research and image collection necessary to create and engaging and informative piece that will appeal to the viewers of GovEdTV. Historic images, data visualizations, detailed maps of engagements and animated sequences will add to the compelling story and production value of the video.
