Northeast North Carolina Coastal Communities Water Level Observation and Prediction System Grant uri icon

abstract

  • This one-year project expands a water level observing network in the northeast SECOORA region by installing affordable water-level sensors that wirelessly telemeter real-time, hyper-local data and tidal predictions to coastal managers' cell phones through a user-friendly app and a website. The project engages local managers to ensure the placement of the sensors, the data and prediction tools, and usability of the app fit the localized needs of northeastern NC community planners and managers. The project also fills significant spatial data gaps in the Outer Banks that will enhance federal tidal and flood modeling efforts. The primary goal of the project is to help coastal managers plan for, manage, and adapt to community flooding. The secondary goal is to provide water level observations to the scientific community to enhance the skill of regional sea level rise predictions in northeastern North Carolina.
