The Roi-Namur Battlefield: Site Survey and Inventory of Submerged Battlescape Heritage Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The aim of this project is to conduct baseline archaeological survey of the submerged battlefield and associated WWII-era cultural resources of nearshore and offshore areas of Roi-Namur Island in Kwajalein Atoll. Emphasis will be placed on inventory and interpretation through historical research, identification of submerged resources, delineation of site extents, and detailed documentation of a representative sub-sample of known sites. This project will result in the collection of baseline data?a pre-requisite for further studies into site degradation, preservation, and management, as well as education and outreach.
