Mosquito Population Levels in Tyrell and Washington Co. Before and After Spray Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Mosquito sampling in two Eastern N Carolina Counties was carried out with four CDC standard light traps in each county ( Washington and Tyrell counties) at widely spread locations reported by county officials to be highly infested with mosquitoes. The samples were done prior to aerial mosquito control spray and after mosquito control spray to provide the counties with data so that FEMA emergency recovery work costs (aerial mosquito spray) could be reimbursed to them by FEMA. Samples were collected in Washington County on two nights prior to spraying, and in Tyrell County for one night prior to spraying(due to travel distances). Samples collected after spraying were required to be done immediately after spraying, and all samples had to be done during clement weather. All samples were brought to the ECU Belk building for identification and counting. A total of ca. 5,000-10,000 mosquitoes were collected, counted and identified to species.
