Water Quality Assessment of Runyon Creek, Washington, NC
Grant
Overview
abstract

Runyon Creek in Washington, NC drains an urbanized area and discharges flow to the Pamlico estuary. Urban runoff is suspected to be source of nutrients, sediment, and bacteria to Runyon Creek and the estuary. Main tributaries of Runyon Creek will be sampled during storm events (n = 8) for total dissolved nitrogen, ammonium, nitrate, chloride, total dissolved phosphorus, phosphate, and E. coli analyses of water samples. Physicochemical parameters including pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation reduction potential, specific conductance, temperature and turbidity will also be determined during each sampling event using field meters. Analyses of water quality will allow us to determine which tributaries of Runyon Creek are most polluted and where the mitigation efforts should be focused.
