abstract

  • This project relates to a proposal for maritime archaeological fieldwork on a vessel believed to represent the remains of the HMS Medway, located in St. Georges Parish, Bermuda. In December, 2007,while carrying out a project on an unidentified iron vessel off the Royal Navy Dockyard, Dr. Philippe Max Rouja, Custodian of Historic Wrecks indicated to ECU archaeologists that the site of Medway was likely to be impacted in the future by development. Upon return to Greenville, historical research into the vessel was commenced. The wreck is located near St. George's Boatyard at 25 Wellington Slip Road. The approximate location of the wreck is at latitude and longitude 32? 22'32.72" N, 64? 41 '12.99"W or UTM coordinated 341304.55 m E, 3583337.42m N (Datum=WGS84). The work proposal represents a multi-faceted project with many parallel goals. The most important goal of the field work is to carry out a cultural heritage assessment of the site. This assessment will be provided to the Government of Bermuda to assist in the decision making process regarding potential impacts to the site.
