abstract

  • This project will examine the history, culture, and legacy of the Carolina Algonquians of eastern North Carolina. The project has three objectives. First, it will take a maritime perspective in analyzing the development of Algonquian culture prior to the arrival of Europeans. Second, it will look at the interaction between Algonquians and Europeans in the 16th and 17th centuries. It will do so, however, by putting the Algonquians at the center, rather than the periphery, of the historical analysis. Moreover, the project will employ a maritime methodological approach. Therefore, this project will be looking at early history in the region from a different perspective, thus adding to an already complex narrative of the colonial era. And finally, it will take a look at the enduring legacy of the Carolina Algonquians.
