  • City of Washington Saving-Money-on-Utilities Public Service Announcements Project The goal of this project is to inform the citizens of Washington, NC and Beaufort County of money saving techniques [***indicated by the list below] that they can easily utilize in order to save money on their home utility bills. The product produced during the course of this project will be 2 Public Service Announcements [approximately 3-5 minutes long each] which the City of Washington will broadcast on their website over the course of the next year. The production of these PSA?s will be directed by Principle Investigator and ECU SoAD Assistant Professor Erick Yates Green along with a collection of crew and actors to include both current ECU students as well as non-ECU consultants. This preproduction, production and post-production of these PSA?s will take place in May of 2011. Techniques to be considered for inclusion: 1. Avoid all outdoor watering including your lawn. 2. Limit the number of times you flush your toilet. 3. Cut back on the number of times you shower. 4. When showering, turn the water off when lathering up. 5. Collect rain and use to water outdoor plants. 6. Keep old fish tank water to use on indoor houseplants. 7. Always run the dishwasher and wash machine with a full load. 8. Install aerating, low-flow faucets and shower heads to limit your water usage. 9. Always take a shower instead of a bath. 10. Set your hot water heater at 120 degrees. 11. During colder months, set your thermostat to 68 degrees or below when you are in the house and awake. 12. During colder months, set your thermostat to 62 degrees or below when you are sleeping or away from your house. 13. Close vents and shut the doors to rooms rarely used. 14. Open curtains and shades on sunny winter days to help warm your home. 15. Use cold water whenever possible. 16. Install CFL bulbs on frequently used light fixtures and lamps. 17. In warmer months, set your thermostat to 80 degrees or above when running your air conditioner. 18. Unplug unused kitchen appliances and computers. 19. In the summer, keep curtains and shades down to help keep your house cooler. 20. Plant shade trees on the southwest side of your home to help shade the summer sun. 21. Install and use ceiling fans in the summer months to cool your home. Use natural light whenever possible instead of turning lights on.
