The Archaeology of an Ottoman and British Mandate Tent Camp

Overview

This project studies the remains of Bedouin tent camps in Israel's Negev Desert from the 1700s to the mid-1900s, a period that historians have mostly ignored. By excavating abandoned camps, analyzing artifacts like pottery, tools, and ornaments, and comparing them with similar sites in Jordan, the research reveals how Bedouin life changed before and after 1948. The goal is to give a clearer, evidence-based picture of Bedouin history that goes beyond the limits of old travel stories and colonial reports.
