  • Performance in mathematics and selection of STEM majors (careers) in higher education is of particular importance to girls in eastern North Carolina to help overcome the disadvantages of rural poverty and/or minority status. A group of concerned mathematics and science women faculty at East Carolina University (ECU) have banded together to provide eastern North Carolina girls with an opportunity to discover the possibilities available to them in STEM careers. This purpose of this project will be to promote advanced mathematics course selection in secondary education by: 1) Holding a MAGIC Conference for 100 - 8th grade girls on a Friday in the Fall of 2011 on East Carolina University?s campus in the College of Computer Science and Technology building with follow-up visits from women scientists to schools in Spring 2012; 2) Creating a week-long summer mathematics and science experience called STEM2 Girls for rising 8th grade females held at South Central High School in Greenville, NC along with a family night on East Carolina University campus; 3) Advertising a Speaker?s Bureau including female mathematicians and scientists available for year-long educator access to motivate student learning and enrich middle school curriculum. The ultimate goal of this project is to help increase advanced mathematics course selection by girls in secondary education in an effort to increase the number of girls pursuing post-secondary education and ultimately selecting STEM majors (careers).
