The East Carolina University College of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Program was developed in 2002 in response to a need for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists in Eastern North Carolina. Prior to that time if Registered Nurses in Eastern North Carolina wished to pursue a career as a nurse anesthetist they had to leave their homes to attend programs outside the area that typically lasted 24-30 months. Many could not leave the area for that long a time and of those who could, most unfortunately elected not to return to the area upon completion of their anesthesia education. This left the area in constant need of nurse anesthesia services that was filled for years through the use of locum tenens providers. A more permanent solution to the problem was sought, one that would alleviate the local supply problem while simultaneously allowing nurses from the local area who wished to become nurse anesthetists the option of attending a nurse anesthesia educational program housed at ECU. The leadership at Vidant Health, East Carolina University, and Pitt Anesthesia Associates thus agreed to the development and ongoing support of the ECU College of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Program. The program has proven to be very successful and in January 2018 will begin its 16th year of educating students. The Program enjoys a 100% graduation rate, and a 100% passing rate on the National Certification Examination. And the majority of graduates upon completion of the program remain in eastern North Carolina as practicing CRNAs. The funding from this grant is applied only to direct costs for the program and not for indirect/overhead/ F &A costs.
