Whereas student veterans tend to outperform traditional students throughout the rest of their academic careers, that first semester can significantly negatively impact their overall GPAs, sense of belonging, and contribute to feelings of anxiety and depression. Student Veterans might feel out of touch with the traditional undergraduate population, that they don't belong in a university, and be unaccustomed to being in control of their own schedules. To better support these students, we developed the Veteran to Scholar Boot Camp, which builds community and understanding by cultivating discussions about war experiences through the study of humanities texts. It prepares these students for academic success through orientations to campus student services on campus while providing unique opportunities to gain comfort in the classroom setting and develop important scholarly skills (such as reflective writing, critical reading and thinking skills). We seek funding to support this program.
