"This is the way we wash the wool". A Multi-disciplinary Approach to Reconstructing Ancient Textile Technologies

To reconstruct the organization of wool production in the Mediterranean basin by focusing on wool washing and fulling techniques so as to better understand resource costs, labor needs and capital investment. As a final outcome, this research should enable us to study the impact that changes in technological systems had on socio-economic systems in the Aegean (13-;12th c. BCE) and Mesopotamia (8-;7th c. BCE). Furthermore, based on my preliminary observations, re-interpreting artifacts as textile tools will cause us to revisit some of our modern concepts of race and gender that often unconsciously underlie historical reconstructions.
