Occupational Noise and Sun Exposure among Outdoor Workers Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that every year, approximately 30 million people in the United States are exposed to noise in their job. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a major potential hazard in many occupations, including those involved in landscaping maintenance. Landscaping personnel are exposed to excessive noise levels from equipment and tools that significantly increase the risk of hearing loss. Information on noise exposure of landscape workers has not been thoroughly examined. This project will document noise exposure among landscapers through personal interviews and the use of personal dosimeters. As a result, future efforts may be developed to evaluate preventive measures related to hearing conservation through improved noise exposure control.
