The purpose of this project is, as a subcontract to Chapel Hill's Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) grant application, to provide education and service referrals to family caregivers of those living with dementia. This continues the work of the ECU GWEP (HRSA 1 U1QHP287220100) serving 41 counties of eastern North Carolina. The education will be delivered at community events organized in collaboration with Area Agencies on Aging, the Dementia Alliance of NC, senior centers and Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers throughout eastern NC. Using adapted free, published HRSA caregiver Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia education modules, the ECU subcontract will present educational content to family caregivers attending the community events. Our team has received the required training and credentialing to offer the Virtual Dementia Tour and Positive Approach to Care during the community events. The Virtual Dementia Tour provides the caregiver with insight into the difficulties their family member has by simulating the sensory deficits found among those living with dementia. The Positive Approach to Care provides caregivers strategies to manage day-to-day living more effectively.. The subcontract will cover the salary support, travel and supplies required for the project. Data collected as required by the larger HRSA GWEP includes the number of participants (family caregivers) who received education and the number who received referrals to supportive services such as family caregiver specialists from their local Area Agency on Aging.
